Luminary New Zealand artist and singer-songwriter, Lisa Crawley shares a piece of velvetine dancefloor treasure with ‘Baby, It’s Fine’, her new song out today and available on all good streaming platforms worldwide.
‘Baby, It’s Fine’ is the third piece of new music to be released from the three-times Silver Scroll nominated songwriter in recent times. Crawley’s Silver Scroll nominated song ‘You Got Me’ was released in July this year, following in the wake of ‘Wedding Band’ (released August 2017) which was recorded with Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen) at the prestigious Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity, where Crawley participated in an artists residency and collaborated with an all-star grammy nominated faculty.
The track was recorded and produced by longtime friend Alistair Deverick (Boycrush), mixed and mastered by Thomas Healy (Paquin, Tiny Ruins) and features instrumentation by Crawley, Deverick and Mark Perkins (Merk); resulting in a dark, aural melange of shimmering waves of guitar that wrap themselves around you while Crawley’s velvet voice soothes you and assures you it will all be okay - meanwhile your heart is melting quietly on the dancefloor.
Accompanying the track today is a video directed by New York-based, New Zealand director and photographer, Emily Hlavac Green, which was filmed in a dreamy loft in New York City. After a lengthy search for a lead actor which only seemed to produced glamour shots of dudes in their seventies, Lisa came to meet James Johnson (who plays Lisa’s awkward love interest in the video) after saying hello while both sitting alone at a Broken Social Scene concert in Central Park. In the true kiwi way of “everyone knowing each other”, James said hi back in a thick New Zealand accent and it turned out, they of course had multiple friends in common. With a back catalogue that boasts two albums and three EPs, coupled with countless collaborations, tours, television appearances and acclaimed music-based projects, Lisa Crawley has well and truly earned her reputation as one of Australasia’s most well-respected musicians.
Collaborations have included working with artists as varied as Tim Finn,Scribe, Andrew Keoghan, Hugo Race, Julia Deans, and Rodney Fisher to name a few.
Crawley is no stranger to touring, having travelled the world extensively (including her native New Zealand and current homebase, Australia) as a solo artist and in support of big names in music like Paul Weller, Jools Holland,Suzanne Vega, Kimbra, and Marlon Williams.
In January 2019, Crawley will be returning to the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity to undertake the ‘Musicians In Residence’ programme, to complete the writing of her third full-length album (out mid 2019), and will be spending more writing and co-writing in the US. As well as this, in collaboration with Bullet Heart Club (Daffodils) and director Kitan Petkovski, Crawley will continue to tour in the must-see, Melbourne Fringe nominated cabaret, Elizabeth, written by Crawley and Rochelle Bright. ‘Elizabeth’ explores the realities of being female and a musician in the current political landscape – touching on themes of the battle for gender equality and the mental and emotional fortitude to maintain longevity in music.
